How to get Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Shiny Diamond and Shiny Pearl

Hunting for shiny Pokémon is an absolutely terrifying thing. I’ve seen people become completely consumed with the pursuit of a single brilliant, to the point where nothing else matters. Days, weeks go by, countless probability equations hastily scribbled on loose sheets. It’s a lifestyle I wouldn’t recommend to anyone, but since I know you’ll pursue it anyway, the least you can do is arm yourself with knowledge. In this guide, we’ll show you how to get Shiny Pokémon in Shiny Diamond and Shiny Pearl Pokémon.

If you don’t know what Shiny Pokémon are, first of all, I sincerely envy you. Second, Shiny Pokémon are Pokémon with an unusual color scheme and a distinct sparkle effect that is seen every time you use them in battle. There is no practical reason to own a brilliance, but their rarity makes them highly desirable. The reason for this rarity is that there is no surefire way to spawn a Shiny Pokemon.

Shiny Pokémon only appear in regular Wild encounters or from Eggs, just like regular Pokémon, and the odds of an encounter being Bright are around 1 in 4,096 (although this is an improvement over to the original Gen IV games). While there is no way to guarantee a brilliant one, however, there are ways to rig the numbers in your favor.

How to get Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Shiny Diamond and Shiny Pearl

There are three proven ways to improve your chances of encountering a Shiny Pokémon in Shiny diamond and shiny pearl:

  • Diglett Energy
  • Inter-region breeding
  • PokéRadar Channel
  • Diglett Energy

First, Diglett Energy. As you walk through the Grand Underground, you will notice various Digletts and Dugtrios burrowing in. Every time a Diglett pops their head out, they drop a bit of glittering energy. If you can collect 40 of these Energy Scraps, your Brilliant encounter rate will approximately double for a few minutes. Granted, this is only an improvement to 1 in 2048, but it’s a start.

    Reproduction

Second, animal husbandry. The odds of hatching a Shiny Pokemon from an egg are about as good as meeting one in the wild (i.e. not very), but you can significantly improve those odds by breeding one of your Pokémon, preferably a Ditto for convenience, with a Pokémon from another country. Any Pokémon from a country other than your own that you trade in has a much higher chance of producing brilliant when high, around 1 in 683. If you can catch all of the non-legendary Pokémon in the PokéDex, you can too. Obtain the Brilliant Charm, which further increases the Brilliant Spawning Chance to 1 in 512.

    Chaining

Finally, chaining. It was the brilliant hunting method of choice in the original Diamond and Pearl, and this always remains the most consistent option, at least for a given degree of “consistent”. The first step in this method is to obtain the PokéRadar, which you can get from Professor Rowan after defeating the Elite Four and registering all 150 native Sinnoh Pokémon in the PokéDex. You’ll also want to talk to Professor Oak in Ramanas Park to get the Channel Counter, which will make this process a bit more user-friendly.

This is how chaining works in Pokémon BDSP: First, stand in a large area of tall grass and activate the radar. Several patches of tall grass will start to shake, and if you walk into one of them it will start an encounter. If you catch the Pokemon you come across, more grass will start to shake. Enter one of the shaking areas and you’ll encounter another of the same Pokémon you just caught. You have to keep walking through shaking areas and catching Pokemon to maintain the chain, because the longer you hold the chain, the more chances you have of encountering a shiny variant of the Pokemon. According to dataminers, here are the precise chances you have of encountering brilliants when you chain encounters:

    • 0 Meetings: 1 in 4096
    • 10 meetings: 1 in 2,521
    • 20 Encounters: 1 in 1820
    • 30 Encounters: 1 in 1,310
    • 35 Dating: 1 in 1,192
    • 36 meetings: 1 in 993
    • 37 meetings: 1 in 799
    • 38 meetings: 1 in 400
    • 39 Encounters: 1 in 200
    • 40 meetings and more: 1 in 99

There are some things you should be aware of in this process. First of all, you can still encounter regular Pokémon in grass that doesn’t shake, and if that happens when you walk towards a shaking area, your chain will break. Make sure you bring as many Max Repels as you can carry to prevent this from happening. Second, you can’t leave the area without breaking your chain, so make sure you have plenty of PokéBalls for plenty of catches.

Finally, you are not guaranteed to have a shaky patch even if you are in the middle of a chain; if you go back to the outside world and no patches are shaking, unfortunately you will have to start all over again. If luck shines on you, however, you’ll see bright little sparks emitting from a patch of quivering grass. This is the signal that a bright has appeared, so you better walk your butt in that grass and grab that thing.

If that sounded like a lot of information, well, that’s because it was. Welcome to the world of brilliant hunting, Captain Ahab. But here’s a TL; DR for your convenience:

  • Stand in the tall grass, activate PokéRadar
  • Catch the Pokémon you meet by shaking the tall grass
  • Move to more shaky grass and catch any Pokémon you meet there
  • Repeat until Shiny Pokemon Happens
  • This is how you get shiny Pokémon Shiny Diamond and Shiny Pearl Pokémon.
